NAEYC Standard: STANDARD 3. OBSERVING, DOCUMENTING, AND ASSESSING TO SUPPORT YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES 3a: Understanding the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment – including its use in development of appropriate goals, curriculum, and teaching strategies for young children.
3b: Knowing about and using observation, documentation, and other appropriate assessment tools and approaches, including the use of technology in documentation, assessment and data collection.
3c: Understanding and practicing responsible assessment to promote positive outcomes for each child, including the use of assistive technology for children with disabilities.
3d: Knowing about assessment partnerships with families and with professional colleagues to build effective learning environments.
Brief Description of Evidence: In the Spring of 2019 in ECED 120 Child Growth and Development, I chose the assignment Observation and Developmental Checklist. I completed this assignment in Child Growth and Development in the Spring Semester or 2019. In the Observation and Developmental Checklist, I had to observe and document a certain child doing different things. I had to assess and see how and if they could do the things that five-year-old children should be able to. I then came up with four different activities over the course of the semester to do with this child. The activities helped her growth in language and mathematics.
Analysis of What I Learned: While creating these activities and pairing them with foundations, I was able to provide this child with developmentally appropriate activities to help her with drawing shapes and recognizing alphabetical letters. Jean Piaget states that children learn through experimentation. So that is what I did with this child. During this course I learned that there are many things that different aged children need to know to develop the appropriate skills.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard: I feel that this artifact demonstrates my competence in Observing and Documenting and Assessing to Support Young Children and Families because, in the Observation and Developmental Checklist I had to sit and observe the child interacting with other kids and observe them doing certain activities. After I documented it, I had to write a paper assessing what the child was doing and what she got wrong and right on the developmental checklist. I was able to observe and document well.I think that this shows how I am competent in my NAEYC Standard.
