NAEYC Standard:  Standard 1 Promoting Child Development and Learning

Promoting Child Development and Learning, The candidate knows and understands young children’s characteristics and needs. They know and understand the multiple influences on development and learning, use knowledge of development to create healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging environments.

Brief Description of Evidence: As a part of my ECED class 230 The Exceptional Child in the Fall Semester of 2019. I had to write a paper about IEP’s and IFSP’s. I learned about the different types of IEP’s, the process of an IEP, what teacher’s do with IEP’s and what types of requirements it takes to obtain an IEP.

Analysis of What I Learned: After completing this assignment, it made me realize how many students actually have IEP’s. Children with IEP’s require a lot of extra help with their needs. I learned how to help accommodate those needs. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, children need love and acceptance. I also learned that most children who have IEP’s do not get the love and acceptance they should with them. These children with IEP’s need someone in their life supporting them. When the children with an IEP have someone who influences them greatly, they learn a lot better.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:This artifact shows that I have learned what it takes to help children who have exceptional needs and characteristics. In my assignment, I talk about how an IEP must include these three components, at the least, to meet the requirements of the law: present levels of performance, goals, and services. This assignment helped me understand what the right influence from a teacher can do to a student with exceptional needs. A child with exceptional needs will need someone who will stand up for them. By doing this assignment I feel that I can do that.
